The Must-Have: Helmets

Wearing a helmet is a must. Even the cool kids are wearing them. Simply put, they prevent the ol’ noggin from injury. That goes for adults, as well as kids.

When choosing a helmet, look for a CPSC sticker. This little guy lets you know that the helmet has passed all required tests with flying colors. Next, find the size that fits best prior to making adjustments, and from there you’ll tighten straps and insert padding for the perfect fit. Don’t buy a helmet you’ll “grow into.”

The helmet should fit comfortably and snugly—just firm enough to keep from moving around during impact or vibration—and should sit level on the head. Under normal conditions a helmet’s average life span is three years. Helmets are not designed for multiple impacts. An impact can cause unseen damage to the helmet. After a single impact, the helmet should be replaced.

A helmet shouldn’t be used if a child can’t comfortably support the helmet’s weight. Children under the age of one should be evaluated by a pediatrician before using a helmet.
